Samsung has just launched Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus globally with premium specs and features. These are gonna sell for a premium price as well. So when you pay a big sum for a flagship Android smartphone in 2018, you expect it to have all the features current flagship android smartphones have been shipping with. With Galaxy S9, Samsung decided to hold of a few such features, some of these are very common in even budget Android smartphones these days.
What i don't like about Samsung Galaxy S9
1) OnePlus 5 and 5T have been out for a while. You can buy those for around 32K in India. The base model ships with 6GB of ram and there is an 8GB variant available as well. Samsung Galaxy S9 on the other hand only has a 4GB ram variant. A flagship phone in 2018 should atleast have 6GB ram. If you want 6GB ram option, you would have to get the Galaxy S9+ variant.
2) Dual Rear Cameras are so common, almost all mid-range Android smartphones from manufacturers like Xiaomi ship with them. Last year's MiA1 featured a regular focal length rear camera along with a telephoto lens. It also offered portrait mode by using these modes. Recently launched Redmi Note 5 Pro too offer Dual rear cameras. Galaxy S9 on the other hand, only has a single camera on the back. So you are gonna miss those extra reach you can get with many budget Android smartphones these days. For an expensive phone, it's a shame Samsung chose not to implement a dual camera setup on S9 like they did on S9 Plus and Note 8.
Welcome Changes in Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus
1) Placing fingerprint sensor adjacent to the camera lens was the biggest design flaw Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus had. It allowed accidental fingerprint marks on the camera lens. Also, for most, it was placed at a very inconvenient place to reach with their forefinger. With Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, Samsung has fixed this and has placed the fingerprint sensor below the camera sensor.
2) F1.5 - F2.4 variable aperture lens the rear camera has is a welcome addition. The larger F1.5 aperture ensures much better low light shots by keeping lower ISO levels and a faster shutter speed to get the proper exposure.
If you are looking to buy these new flagship Android smartphones from Samsung, it's better to buy the bigger Galaxy S9 Plus variant as it has Dual Cameras and a larger battery. I hope Samsung would change their approach and bring same camera setup on both regular and plus variants when they launch Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus in 2019.
