As you might have heard, Vivo has showcased a new Android smartphone at CES 2018 with an In Glass fingerprint scanner ( made by Synaptics ). Yes, an invisible fingerprint sensor under the regular glass display. It is rumored Apple wanted something similar like this on their iPhone X, but failed to perfect it and Samsung ran out of time to put a similar one on their Galaxy Note 8.
Is this feature revolutionary ? Well, it is definitely an innovative move and we are gonna see it in a lot of upcoming Android smartphones for sure. Kudos to Vivo for the first guys to implement it. It's no small feat to achieve something what giants like Samsung and Apple couldn't.
In terms on convenience, does it make a huge leap ? NO.
Having a rear mounted fingerprint sensor is without any doubt the easiest, fastest and most convenient way to unlock your smartphone. When you pull it out your pocket, your index finger naturally is near the scanner, and the phone can be unlocked easily in a second or two.
Also, for the inside the screen fingerprint scanner to work, you would need to have an OLED display, which will only be available on flagship and high end devices. So budget phones are gonna continue to ship with regular fingerprint scanner mounted on the back.
